AsaboythebooksofErnestThomsonSetonandJohnHargraveaboutNativeAmericans suchas“TheBookofWoodcraftandIndianLore”createdinmeanawarenessofcultures olderthananddifferentfromourownthatseemedadmirable,particularlyfortheirclose connection to and respect for the natural world. OtherinfluencesfromthattimewerethestoriesofRobinHood,KingArthurandthebooks ofArthurRansomelike“SwallowsandAmazons”.IwasinterestedinAlfredWatkins’“Old StraightTrack”andtheideaofleysstretchingacrossthelandscapeoftenpastthetumuliand “camps” of the ancient peoples of Britain. Of course the most exciting places of all were the Megalithic stone circles of Stonehenge
and Avebury which the family visited then and I visit frequently now.
TwootherexperiencesinthoseearlyyearsbeforetheSecondWorldWarremaininmy memory.Oneoccurredwhilewalkingwithmyfatherinthefadinglightundertheyewtrees ontherouteofStaneStreetnearBoxHillwhereI“saw”aRomansoldierstandingwithspear andshield,asifonguard,besidethepath.Dadwassurprisedtobeasked“whowasthat man?”. Theother,moresignificantone,wasduringawarmsummerafternoononWimbledon CommonwhereIwaswalkingbarefootdownamuddypaththroughtheoakandhazel woodsnearBeverlyBrook.ThereI“encounteredPan”andmadeacommitmenttorespect Nature,thelandandourancientancestors.So,earlyinmylifeaseedwasplantedforthe tree with its many limbs, branches and twigs that this website, in part, shares with you.Lookingbackatthechainofdevelopmentthroughtheyears,theotherevents,peopleand authorsthathavegivenmefoodforthought,Icanonlyhighlightsomeofthemost significantones.EncounteringRobertGraves’seminalbook“TheWhiteGoddess”in1950 certainlystartedathreadthathaspersistedsincemyfirstencounterwithhiswork.Along withthatcameanappreciationoftheimportanceofmythologyandthenatureofpoetic inspirationandimagination.HisinterestinOghamandancientsymbolicsystemsspoketo me and led on to the Northern Runic alphabet and its associations. Later,twoyearswiththearmytookmetoSingaporeandHongKongwheretherewere opportunitiestoencounterChineseculture,TaoismandZenBuddhism.AninterestinHindu meditativetechniquesalsodevelopedataboutthistime.JohnBlofeldwasanauthorwho broughtanappreciationofmanyofthesematterstomethen.Soonaftermyreturnto EnglandthefirstincarnationoftheLeyhuntermagazinemadeitsappearanceandgotmy subscriptionfortherestofitsexistenceandmyattendanceattheannual“moot”.Atoneof these,inHereford,IgottoknowbothJohnMichellandMartinBrennanwhoweresignificant influences on me. FascinationwithArchaeology,Architecture,Geomancy,Gematria,Coloursymbolism, TesselationandGeometrylednaturallytotheworkandpublicationsofKeithCritchlowwho waschairmanoftheResearchIntoLostKnowledgesocietyandtoattendanceattheir meetingsinKensington.BooksbyTomLethbridgethearchaeologistanddowserand,of coursetheincomparableAlexanderThomjoinedmanyothersonmyoverloadedshelves. HenryLincoln’s“HolyBloodHolyGrail”togetherwithArthurGuirdham’sinvestigationintothe Cathar/Gnostic heresies were other strands of the tapestry. Fromanotherdirection,BuckminsterFullerandhisgeodesicconceptsappliedtobuilding structuresexcitedmeaswell.MylargecollectionofOSmapsexpandedwithmysenseofthe interconnectednessoflandscapeandtheseasonalmovementoftheSun,MoonandStars. CarlosCastenedaandJohnLillyappearedontheintellectualhorizontogetherwiththewhole fascination of the 60’s with matters of the mind and altered states of consciousness.
